Gelson’s bidding on some Haggen stores

Gelson's Markets is joining Smart & Final on the acquisition of some Haggen properties in Southern California.



Gelson's, a regional supermarket chain operating in Southern California, announced it is bidding on eight Haggen locations across five counties: Los Angeles County (Santa Monica); Orange County (Laguna Beach, Ladera Ranch); Riverside County (Rancho Mirage); San Diego County (Carlsbad, Del Mar, Pacific Beach); and Ventura County (Thousand Oaks).



Washington-based grocery store chain Haggen, which filed for bankruptcy last month, is seeking approval from the bankruptcy court to establish bidding procedures so it can sell off many of its stores.



"We are excited at the prospect of significantly expanding our brand offerings to new communities," said McDougall. "Our bid is subject to higher and better offers at an auction currently scheduled for the beginning of November. Should our bid prove successful, it will be a benefit for thousands of shoppers who value quality products and exceptional service. Furthermore, we would welcome the opportunity to have Haggen store employees join the Gelson's family, and foresee growth opportunities for our associates."



Gelson's currently operates 18 full-service specialty grocery stores in Southern California.
