Fresh & Easy offering free canvas bags

4/14/2009

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. In celebration of Earth Day, Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market announced its stores will be giving away free canvas bags to customers on April 22 when they spend $10 or more.

"We want to make it easier for our customers to make more environmentally friendly decisions," said Tim Mason, Fresh & Easy CEO. "If we can get more customers shopping with reusable bags, collectively we can make a big difference. We want to help our customers be part of the solution in reducing single use carrier bags."

To encourage the use of reusable bags, Fresh & Easy offers a variety of options including a canvas bag for only 99-cents, a wine carrier canvas bag, which holds up to seven bottles for $1.99, a 20-cent reusable plastic bag that will be replaced for free if it is ever torn or damaged, and an organic canvas bag for $2.99.

As a further demonstration of the company's commitment to the environment, Fresh & Easy only sells energy efficient light bulbs, uses LED lighting in external signs and freezer cases, and offers customer recycling in every store. The company also recycles or reuses all of its display packaging, sending the majority back through its distribution center.

Fresh & Easy is a pilot member of the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Volume Certification Program, demonstrating its commitment to build sustainable buildings and has voluntarily joined the California Climate Action Registry and The Climate Registry to disclose its greenhouse gas emissions. At its distribution center in Riverside, the company invested $13 million in a solar roof installation, which is one of California's largest at 500,000 sq. ft and provides over 75% of the facility's energy.
