Food Lion selling canned wine
Wine with screw top lids was bad enough for purists, now retailers are filling their shelves with wine-based products package in cans.
Food Lion is the latest grocer to offer a brand called Friends Fun Wine at its stores in North Carolina and Virgina. The product is really more of a wine-based beverage described in marketing materials as a low alcohol, low calorie, flavored wine drink in a can. The product is packaged in an 8.4 ounce aluminum can and comes in flavors such as red and white sangria, rose and white moscato, strawberry and peach moscato, cabernet coffee espresso and chardonnay coffee cappuccino. The products are said to be made from premium French grapes with 6% alcohol content and priced at $1.99 a can.
"Friends Fun Wine is all about fun. It's an everyday beverage for anyone who enjoys wine or beer, but looking for a new experience,” said CEO Joe Peleg. “Our cans allow consumers the portability and convenience to enjoy our wine anywhere, at any time. This affordably priced beverage is the ultimate accessory to fun, and we believe it will be a hit with Food Lion’s customers.”
In addition to Food Lion, the brand is available at retailers such as Walmart, Kmart, 7-Eleven and Save-A-Lot.
