Food Lion launches nutrition navigation program

SALISBURY, N.C. Food Lion has launched a nutrition service to help customers more easily find the healthiest food choices throughout the supermarket. Dubbed "Guiding Stars," the program uses a system of stars indicating the level of nutritional value for a particular item.

The star system ranges from one star for good nutritional value to three stars for best nutritional value. Items without any stars either do not meet the requirements for the ratings system, or have not been rated. Scoring is determined based on the content of the food, with points added for things like vitamins and whole grains, and subtracted for saturated fat, cholesterol and other elements considered unhealthy.
