Flying Tiger, the U.S. banner of Danish discounter Tiger, has landed in Manhattan, opening a 5,000-sq.-ft. outpost in the Flatiron district. The store has a modern Scandinavian look, with white walls, light wood flooring and a single aisle that winds through the space. The design focuses all the attention on the quirky, eclectic and very affordable product.

The merchandise at Flying Tiger crosses a wide range of categories (and generations), including home, toys, hobby, office, party, snacks, electronics, gadgets, fashion accessories and seasonal, much of it done with a Danish twist. The mix ranges from the whimsical (nose-shaped pencil sharpeners and mugs adorned with mustaches) to the basic (picture frames, teapots, cookies and notebooks). Some 90% of the items, roughly half of which are designed in house, sell for $10 or less.

Based in Cophengan, Tiger opened its first store in 1995 and now operates more than 400 stores in 26 countries. (The company operates under the name Flying Tiger banner in the United States and Asia due to trademark issues.)
