Family Dollar to pay $75,000 fine

7/7/2009

Charlotte, N.C. Family Dollar Stores is one of nine companies fined by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, according to a report in the Charlotte Business Journal.

The commission has alleged that the companies violated the federal ban on lead paint.

Family Dollar has agreed to pay $75,000 to settle allegations that it knowingly manufactured, imported or sold toys and other children’s products with paint or other coatings that contained lead levels in violation of federal law.

In agreeing to settle the matter, Family Dollar and the other companies deny that they knowingly violated the law.

The products were recalled in 2007 and 2008.

In total, the nine companies will pay more than $500,000 in civil penalties.
