Duckwall-ALCO posts Oct. sales increase

ABILENE, Kan. Duckwall-ALCO Stores announced that sales from continuing operations for the four weeks ended Nov. 2 increased 7.3% to $36.6 million compared to $34.1 million in the prior-year month. Total sales, excluding fuel, increased 8.6% over the prior-year month. Same-store sales for the period decreased 2.7% with and without fuel.

Sales for the third quarter of fiscal 2009 increased 4.7% to $115.5 million compared to $110.3 million during the same period last year. Same-store sales for the third quarter decreased 6.3% with fuel and decreased 6.6% without fuel.

Larry Zigerelli, president and ceo, commented, "The improved October sales performance met expectations and reflects the initial results of the new marketing program combined with a heightened focus on achieving operational excellence."
