Duckwall-ALCO Cuts 27 Staffers

Abilene, Kan. Duckwall-ALCO Stores Inc. on Monday said it will cut 27 staffers at its headquarters in a streamlining move. The cuts make up more than 10% of its Abilene, Kan.-based headquarters staff.

In April, the company said it would cut four executive positions to save money. The corporate labor cost reductions to date are expected to save $2.5 million annually.

Also in April, the company said same-store sales fell 5.6% in March amid a weak retail environment.

Total sales for the five weeks ended April 6 rose 3% to $43.1 million.
