Duckwall-ALCO April sales decline 0.9%
ABILENE, Kan. Duckwall-ALCO today announced an April sales decrease of 0.9% for the four weeks ended May 4. Sales came in at $33.5 million for the month, compared to $33.8 million in April 2007. Same-store sales decreased 8.6% (without fuel, 8.7%).
"April continued to be a tough sales period for the company, as it has been for most companies in the retail sector," stated Donny Johnson, interim president and ceo.
During the month, the company closed nine ALCO stores and two Duckwall stores and opened two ALCO stores.
Sales for the first quarter decreased to $106 million from $106.3 million last year, an approximate 0.3%, while same-store sales decreased 8.4%, 8.5% without fuel, in comparison to last year.
"Management has changed its merchandising and marketing strategies and expects improvement in the company's sales during the second quarter," continued Johnson. "We ... are now aggressively focused on evaluating and implementing a more efficient model for our store operations."
