Dollar meaning devalued in promotion
This week’s circular from Target proclaims that it is “Dollar Week,” but what exactly does than mean. Apparently, it means that transactions at the company’s U.S. stores will be executed in U.S. currency, since none of the 100 items featured in the 16-page advertisement are actually priced at $1. Instead, items are priced in whole dollar amounts such as $3 or $25, as opposed to the more common $2.99 or $24.99. The notion of “Dollar Week,” is intended to create a sense of value, and clearly the ad features some compelling offers such as Jerzees branded T-shirts for $4, kids ProSpirit brand shoes for $10, a $69 Singer sewing machine and an eight-pack of Dove soap for $7. As is often the case with marketing, it is best not to take things literally, but to maintain the integrity of an event branded as Dollar Week, it might be a good idea to included a couple items that, you know, actually cost $1.
