Disney, Costco back out of wine promotion

7/31/2007

LOS ANGELES

Walt Disney Co. has backed out of the wine game, just as the first bottles of its Ratatouille Chardonnay were supposed to appear on Costco shelves this August. According to the Los Angeles Times, Disney and Costco decided to ditch the idea after getting complaints from California winemakers and others concerned about underage drinking.

The Times reported that according to Disney, the strongest opposition came from the Californian Wine Institute, a San Fransico trade group. The institute was reportedly against the wine, a French 2004 vintage white Burgundy, because of its label, which features Remy, the rodent star of the Disney/Pixar film "Ratatouille," because it had the potential to appeal to people below the legal drinking age.
