DirectBuy: Mobile is everywhere

10/21/2015

Mobile devices are becoming the norm for every facet of consumers’ lives, including shopping.

According to a new infographic from membership-based retailer DirectBuy, 29% of U.S. adults describe their smartphone as something they can’t live without, 44% sleep with a smartphone by their bed to avoid missing notifications, and 67% check smartphones for notifications even without receiving some type of notification.

In terms of mobile shopping, 82% of smartphone users, or 166.2 million people, shop with mobile devices in 2015. That percentage is expected to rise to 86%, or 198.8 million people, by 2018. Seventy-eight percent of smartphone product searches result in a purchase, compared to 64% of tablet searches and 61% of desktop searches.

However, mobile experience matters. Smartphone and tablet users are five times more likely to abandon a task if a site isn’t mobile-optimized. Seventy-nine percent will travel to another site to complete a mobile task or purchase, and 52% say a bad mobile experience makes them less likely to do business with a company.
