Changes to Tumi’s board of directors
Tumi Holdings has named Joseph R. Gromek as chairman of the company’s board of directors. Gromek, who joined the board in April 2012, succeeds Richard P. Hanson, who has stepped down as chairman.
Until his retirement in February 2012, Gromek served as president and CEO of the Warnaco Group since April 2003, and as a member of the company’s board. From 1996 to 2002, Gromek served as president and CEO of Brooks Brothers. During the past 25 years, Gromek has also held senior management positions with Saks Fifth Avenue, Limited Brands and Ann Taylor Stores.
The board has also appointed Alexander W. Smith and Christopher Fielding as members, bringing the total number of directors to seven.
Smith has more than 30 years of retail industry experience and in-depth knowledge of international operations and merchandising. Since February 2007, he has served as president and CEO of Pier 1 Imports, and has served on the company’s board. Prior to joining Pier 1 Imports, Smith spent more than 10 years serving in senior leadership roles at TJX Companies.
Fielding is currently a principal at private equity firm Doughty Hanson & Co.
“I believe that the time is right for this transition given the company’s recent operating performance and continued excellent financial health,” said Hansen regarding his decision to step down. “I am proud to have been part of Tumi’s success during that last few years and pleased to be passing on the reins to Joe. He continues to bring a wealth of industry knowledge and experience to Tumi making him the ideal person to help guide the company forward. In addition, on behalf of the Tumi board of directors, I want to welcome Alex and Chris. They bring deep knowledge and a unique perspective to the company and the retail industry, and we believe that they will each provide valuable insight to the board.”
Tumi also announced that Peter L. Gray has joined the company as EVP and general counsel. Gray most recently served as EVP, chief administrative officer and general counsel at ModusLink Global Solutions. Gray began his career at Hale and Dorr and is a graduate of Harvard Law School.
Tumi is a leading global brand of travel, business and lifestyle products and accessories. The brand is sold in more than 200 stores from New York to Paris to London and Tokyo, as well as in the world’s top department, specialty and travel retail stores in more than 75 countries.
