Casual Male Q2 profit soars on expense cuts

Canton, Mass. Casual Male Retail Group said Tuesday its fiscal second-quarter profit nearly doubled as hefty cost cuts offset a drop in sales.

For the quarter ended Aug. 1, Casual Male earned $3.6 million, up from $1.9 million in the year-ago period.

Sales fell 13% to $98.3 million. Same-store sales declined 13.9% as retail and direct channels both posted declines.

Total expenses fell 17% to $39.5 million.
