Canadian Retailer Goes Bagless

8/30/2007

Brampton, Ontario, The new Loblaw Superstore in Milton, Ontario, Canada, that opened on Wednesday is the first major grocery and general-merchandise retail store in North America to eliminate traditional plastic grocery bags at checkouts.

In April of this year, Loblaw made a commitment to reduce 1 billion plastic grocery bags from Canada's landfills within one year.

Additionally, customers can opt to use the PC Green Box, which is designed to fit in store shopping carts and can hold up to the equivalent of three to five grocery bags.

Each household in Milton was mailed a complimentary PC Green Bag and a coupon for a free PC Green Box with a minimum $25 purchase. Shoppers also may bring in any reusable bag, even from another retailer.
