Burlington Coat’s Big Apple move
When temperatures turn cooler this fall New Yorker’s will have a new Burlington Coat Factory store to satisfy their need for outerwear.
The national off-price chain and operator of 482 stores opened its newest unit in New York’s Union Square on Friday. The 92,000-sq.-ft store is located at 14th Street and University Place is the company’s sixth New York location, which means Manhattan residents are already familiar with the Burlington, NJ-based company.
Despite use of the word "coat" in the company’s name and an extensive offering of coats, Burlington also offers a broad selection of ladies' dresses, suits and sportswear, juniors, accessories, menswear, family footwear, children's clothing, furniture and accessories for baby at Baby Depot, home decor and gifts. And as is the case with other value oriented retailers, Burlington is enjoying success amid a tepid economic recovery. Same store sales for the company’s second quarter increased 2.9% and 1.7% for the first half of the year. Those figures came on top of prior year increases 4% and 2.1%.
Burlington Coat Factory was taken private in 2006 by Bain Capital.
