Build-A-Bear loss widens in Q2

7/30/2009

St. Louis Build-A-Bear lost nearly $6 million during its second quarter ended July 4, compared with a loss of $4.8 million in the same period last year.

Results in the recent quarter included $100,000 in charges related to the closing of its Friends 2B Made stores. To date, five have closed, with the remaining four are scheduled to close in the third quarter.

Build-A-Bear’s second-quarter loss also reflected a $300,000 charge related to the company’s minority investment Ridemakerz, a company that allows customers to build their own personalized cars.

Build-A-Bear’s second-quarter revenue fell 13% to $82.4 million, from $94.7 million in last year’s quarter. Consolidated same-store sales dropped nearly 14%, reflecting an 8.2% increase in Europe and a 17.5% decline in North America.
