Bruno’s begins liquidation sale

5/8/2009

Birmingham, Ala. Bruno’s Supermarkets began liquidation sales Friday for 25 of its Bruno’s, Food World and FoodMax stores. Hilco Merchant Resources is managing the liquidation.

The liquidation sale is part of Bruno’s bankruptcy agreement. The chain sold its stores to Southern Family Markets last week for approximately $46 million. The company plans to operate 31 Bruno’s and Food World stores in Alabama and Florida, and Hilco will liquidate the remaining 25, according to an article in the Birmingham Business Journal.

All merchandise, fixtures and equipment are being sold. Once the stores are empty, all retail space, which encompasses nearly 1.25 million sq. ft., will be returned to their respective retail landlords across Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.

The sale is expected to last three to four weeks, and all associates will remain employed until each store is depleted and closed, according to a Hilco spokesman.
