Brooklyn goes Euro: King’s Plaza redo features Primark and Zara
Primark, one of Europe’s largest apparel retailers, will anchor a complete redevelopment of Macerich’s Kings Plaza in Brooklyn. It will be joined by Spain-based Zara, which the New York Times has called the world’s largest fashion retailer. The Sears store at Kings Plaza will close for renovation in September.
Since acquiring Kings Plaza in 2012, Macerich has been in steady upgrade mode at the 1.1 million sq.-ft. enclosed mall. "We are very pleased that both Primark and Zara share our vision of making Kings Plaza a 'must have' retail location in this densely populated trade area," said Macerich Executive Vice President of development Randy Brant. "We have been pursuing this significant redevelopment opportunity since we purchased the property.”
Primark’s three-level space will dominate the north half of the building and a two-level Zara store will be adjacent to the mall entrance, which will be made over with a four-story glass curtain wall admitting more natural light. Space will be available for more high-profile retailers and restaurants, according to Macerich.
Primark is just beginning a move into the U.S. market, having this month opened its third stateside store at the Danbury Fair Mall in Connecticut. Fast-fashion pioneer Zara is part of the Inditex fashion retail group led by Amancio Ortega Gaona, the world’s third richest man according to Forbes.
