Birks & Mayors reports same-store sales drop in Q3

2/2/2010

Montreal Birks & Mayors reported Tuesday that net sales rose in the fiscal third quarter ended Dec. 26, but comps fell.

The jeweler reported a sales increase of 1.0% to $89.3 million, from $88.1 million in the year-ago quarter largely due to the strength of the Canadian dollar.

Comparable-store sales during this period decreased by 4%, which was comprised of a 9% decline in sales of the U.S. stores partially offset by a 2% increase in sales from the stores in Canada.

Also during the quarter, the company announced the January closure of two Florida stores, as well as two stores in Canada slated to close in March.

The company also announced the planned opening of a new Mayors store in The Gardens Mall in West Palm Beach, Fla., later in February.

Birks & Mayors currently operates 35 stores across Canada and 29 stores across Florida and Georgia.
