Beauty and the Best Buy?

8/2/2013

Reports from Canada have Best Buy dabbling in e-commerce sales of beauty products. Best Buy Canada is now offering a selection of personal care, baby and health and wellness products on its “Viva from Best Buy” website, accessible through BestBuy.ca’s homepage.

At first glance it might seem very odd for a consumer electronics retailer to offer a line of products that is as far removed as it can get from smartphones, laptops and televisions. But the article points out that Canadians are quite tech savvy, and according to an eMarketer report it references, e-commerce sales in Canada are expected to grow from $24.5 billion in 2013 to nearly $35 billion by 2016. That, coupled with the additional revenue that the company stands to generate by exploring a new market — primarily Canadian women in this case — was enough of a reason for Best Buy Canada to go off script and meet the needs of a potentially growing segment.
