August Same-Store Sales Fall at Kohl's, J.C. Penney

9/3/2008

New York City Kohl's Corp. Wednesday reported its same-store store sales for August fell 5.8%, saying sales in its juniors and young men's departments were "challenging."

Kohl's CEO Kevin Mansell said back-to-school items such as shoes and children's clothing sold well, while juniors and young men's were "more challenging."

"We continue to manage our inventory levels and expenses conservatively in this environment," Mansell said in a statement.

Year-to-date same-store sales fell 5.6%.

J.C. Penney Co. Inc. said Wednesday its same-store sales fell 4.9% in August.

J.C. Penney said total sales in the month fell 3.2% to $1.51 billion from $1.56 billion in the year-ago period.

Women’s apparel and family shoes were the strongest-performing merchandise divisions in August, while fine jewelry and home experienced the weakest sales during the month. The Central and Northwest regions were the best-performing regions, with the Southeast experiencing the softest sales in August.
