The Army & Air Force Exchange Service reminded those qualified to shop in its outlets that they never pay sales tax. AAFES also promoted items for the BTS season, such as Toshiba and Compaq computers, buy-one-get-one-free deals on health and beauty items, and 30% off on L’Oréal and Revlon cosmetics.

BTS sales at Staples, Office Depot and OfficeMax will be easier to monitor this year due to a new tracking and point-of- sale service offered by The NPD Group. The service will enable clients to monitor sales trends across 130 categories and 300 product features for the past three years. Twelve year NPD veteran Perry James will oversee the service.

EXECUTIVE NEWS

Office Depot named Steven Schmidt, former president and ceo of ACNielsen, president of its North American Business Solutions Division. Schmidt replaces Cindy Campbell, evp of the division since 2003 who will remain with the company through March 2008. Schmidt also held executive roles with Pillsbury, PepsiCo and Procter&Gamble. The leadership change followed weak growth last year and a sharp decline in profitability during the first half of this year at the Office Depot division that serves large corporate clients.
