TRU KEEPS ’06 NUMBERS NORTH OF NEGATIVE
WAYNE, N.J. —By most measures, things are improving at Toys “R” Us—even if only slightly.
After being acquired in July 2005 by a consortium of private equity firms and REITS, the nation’s largest vertical toy retailer revealed its first full-year figures as a semiprivate firm, with net sales for the period ended Feb. 3 topping out at $13.1 billion, buoyed by more than $1.6 billion from the consolidation of Toys-Japan. (Excluding the consolidation of Toys-Japan, sales for the year rose roughly 0.5%.) Operating income was approximately $553 million (excluding gains on the sales of properties) compared to approximately $326 million in 2005 (excluding merger-related and other charges).
Perhaps the brightest note is that comps for TRU’s U.S. division increased 0.6% in fiscal 2006, marking the division’s first comps increase in six years.
