RANDOM NOTES: High-end beauty marketer shu uemura in South Coast Plaza, Costa Mesa, Calif., was selected as Store of the Year in National Association of Store Fixture Manufacturers’ (NASFM) 2007 retail design competition. The 900-sq.-ft. shop has an un cluttered , modern, elegant look, with a white monotone palette and a splash of color graphics. The Color Bar, a sculptural-quality display that is edged in continuous light and accented by a mirror bar, serves as the centerpiece of the carefully designed space. The store was designed in-house, by shu uemura, Tokyo. The 10,300-sq.-ft. store combines such signature Orvis design features as heavy timber elements, iconic jumping trout and a working fireplace with Florida-inspired colors and materials. … Lord & Taylor is getting a makeover. The department store company hired Randell Ridless, who has designed interiors for such upscale players as Burberry and Bergdorf Goodman, to collaborate with Mancini Duffy, New York City, on a storerevamp program. In 2006, Lord & Taylor was acquired by NRDC Equity Partners from Federated Department Stores.Coach will unveil a new retail format, Coach Legacy, this fall, with locations in Manhattan and Los Angeles. The stores will average 1,200 sq. ft. and feature higher-priced goods than regular Coach stores, as well as limited-edition items. Coach president and executive creative director Reed Krakoff is designing the stores, which will have an intimate, residential feel with wood plank flooring and furniture.

PERSONNEL UPDATES: Industry veteran Chuck Luckenbill has joined OfficeMax, Naperville, Ill., as VP, visual merchandising. Luckenbill most recently served as president of P.O.P. Store Fixtures, Philadelphia. He also spent time at Kohl’s Corp., where he was VP of visual merchandising.

NEW PROJECTS: PKN Orlen, Poland’s largest petroleum retailer, has selected the retail division of CBX (Colemanbrandworx), New York City, to develop a new convenience store concept that will be used in new locations and retrofits.
