Are Macy’s Trump troubles just beginning?

7/17/2015

Donald Trump contends he doesn’t forget and that could be a bad thing for Macy’s now that polls show the businessman turned politician leading a crowded field of Republican presidential hopefuls and using campaign stops to belittle the department store chain.

Macy’s was already off to a rough start this year with first quarter sales and profits that were below expectations. Then the situation with Donald Trump emerged. He made comments about Mexicans that were quickly deemed offensive and prompted companies such as Macy’s, which sold a line of Trump branded apparel, to sever ties with the brash executive. As the situation unfolded and Trump was unrelenting in his views, his remarks served to elevate the national conversation about illegal immigration and galvanized support for a man political pundits continue to maintain isn’t a serious presidential candidate.

Macy’s and CEO Terry Lundgren are hoping that proves to be the case soon lest Trump’s growing legion of followers begin taking his derogatory comments about Macy’s seriously and put the retailer’s second quarter and perhaps full year financial targets in jeopardy.
