Amazon launches free same-day delivery for Prime members in select areas

Seattle – Amazon is upping the ante with physical retailers with its launch of free same-day delivery for orders of more than $35 to members of its Prime program.



The new service, called Prime Free Same-Day Delivery, is available for more than one million items and in 14 U.S. metropolitan areas. Orders must be placed before noon local time to be delivered by 9 p.m., seven days a week.



Eligible cities include Atlanta; Baltimore; Boston; Dallas/Fort Worth; Indianapolis; Los Angeles; New York City; Philadelphia; San Diego; San Francisco Bay area; Seattle/Tacoma; Tampa Bay area and Washington, D.C.



Amazon has been offering same-day delivery in select markets for a few years, charging a same-day delivery fee of $5.99 per order for Prime members. Non-Prime members pay an $8.99 delivery fee plus a 99-cent-per-item fee for same-day service.



Amazon also recently announced it will hire more than 6,000 new employees to staff picking and packing jobs at more than 50 distribution centers across the country.
