Amazon expands restaurant delivery service, adds price match

More consumers can now order takeout food from, and rest assured they are paying a competitive price.

Amazon is making one-hour delivery from 117 different local restaurants available to Prime Now customers in 33 ZIP codes across the San Francisco market. Using the Prime Now mobile app, San Francisco customers can view participating restaurants, browse menus, place orders, track the status of their delivery, and watch as their driver travels from the restaurant to the delivery address in real time.

Once an order is placed, Amazon delivery partners deliver the food in an hour or less. There are no menu markups or service fees, and delivery on all orders in San Francisco is free for a limited time.

In addition, Amazon is rolling out a new restaurant delivery price match guarantee in San Francisco. If a customer finds a restaurant item on Prime Now Restaurants that is priced higher than the regularly-priced item on the restaurant’s current online menu within 24 hours of placing the order, Amazon will refund the customer the price of the item. This guarantee will gradually roll out in the other markets that offer Prime Now restaurant delivery.

“San Francisco is known for incredible restaurants, and now Prime members across the city can enjoy their favorite local restaurants at home or at the office,” said Gus Lopez, general manager, Amazon Restaurants. “With Prime Now restaurant delivery, customers can expect to pay the same price for their favorite dishes whether they visit the restaurant or order the same items for delivery.”

In addition to San Francisco, Amazon offers Prime Now restaurant delivery in San Diego, Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Austin, and Portland. Adding a new major metropolitan market, as well as introducing a 24-hour price match, is one more sign Amazon is moving beyond competing with other retailers and also wants to be a dominant player in the burgeoning third-party online delivery arena.
