Again! Kmart latest to get hacked

10/13/2014

Kmart said its store payment systems were penetrated by cybercriminals who used a form of malware undetectable by current anti-virus systems.

The retailer said its information technology team on October 9 detected its payment data systems had been breached and immediately launched a full investigation working with a leading IT security firm. It was determined the breach began in early September and upon detection Kmart said it was able to quickly remove the malware.

“However, we believe certain debit and credit card number have been compromised,” Kmart said in a statement. “Based on the forensic investigation to date, no personal information, no debit card PIN numbers, no email addresses and no social security numbers were obtained by those criminally responsible. There is also no evidence that Kmart.com customers were impacted.”

Kmart said it was working closely with federal law enforcement authorities, its banking partners and IT security firms in an ongoing investigation.

“We are deploying further advanced software to protect our customers' information,” Kmart said.

The retailer also advised its customers that they would not be liable for any unauthorized charges made during the month of September through the date the breach was detected on October 9. The company also said it would offer free credit monitoring.
