After a slow start to the year, Sony Entertainment says that sales of its PlayStation 3 game console are heating up.
Sony, which announced a $100 price drop on the PS3 on July 9, said hardware sales at its top five retailers increased 135% in July after the price drop went into effect, with game sales increasing 15%.
But the PS3 still has a long way to go to catch up to the Nintendo Wii. According to The NPD Group, console sales for Nintendo rose 44% during the first half of 2007 to $6.1 billion, with game sales increasing 27% to $2.9 billion.
Nintendo reported sales of 2.3 million units of the Wii console in the United States and Canada the first six months of 2007.
Microsoft said its worldwide installed base of the Xbox 360 console hit 11.6 million units in July after sales of 197,000 consoles in June.
