7-Eleven CEO stars in CBS reality show

2/22/2010

New York City Joe DePinto, the CEO and president of 7-Eleven, was the star on Sunday night’s episode of “Undercover Boss,” a new reality show on CBS.

The "Sultan of the Slurpee," as was referred to in the program, spent a week undercover, working among the rank and file. In keeping with the show policy, DePinto was given a back story. In his case, it was that of a former real estate worker who was out of work and looking for new opportunities. It was explained that the cameras were there because he was being filmed for a documentary about experienced workers applying for entry-level jobs.

DePinto (who went by the name Danny on the show) started out in Shirley, N.Y., at a 7-Eleven that ranks highest in coffee sales with 2,500-plus cups a day. DePinto also spent time in the chain’s largest bakery, in Baltimore, where he helped make the pastries that are delivered each day to the stores. In both spots, he had trouble keeping up with pace.

In another location, the CEO worked an overnight shift, mopping the floor, cleaning the restroom and stocking shelves.
