The fit will again be getting fitter in the state of New York, leaving just six states where fitness businesses must remain closed due to coronavirus concerns

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that gyms meeting all health and safety standards may open on Aug. 24, while local elected officials may choose to keep gyms closed in their towns until Sept. 2. Buildings must be limited to 33% member capacity and facemasks must be worn.

Fitness center doors remain closed in Arizona, California, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Washington, and Puerto Rico.

"While it's encouraging that we've reached the point where it's acceptable for them to begin reopening in our communities, this is not the time to forget that the pandemic is ongoing,” Governor Cuomo said.

Daily positive COVID-19 test rates have fallen below 1% in New York.
