As president of the western division, Berkes built Federal's California store count to almost 25.

Federal Realty, owner and operator of more than 100 shopping centers and power centers, has named Jeffrey S. Berkes president and chief operating officer.

Berkes joined Federal in 2000 as chief investment officer and became president of the Western Region in 2011. He succeeded in broadening Federal’s presence on the West Coast, where the company’s operating income doubled in eight years under his leadership.

The bulk of Federal’s centers lie in the Northeast corridor between Boston and Washington, D.C., but Berkes’s efforts out West helped build the company’s center count in California to near 25.

"It is with great pleasure that I, along with the unanimous support of our board of trustees, am able to promote an executive of Jeff's intelligence and integrity to this newly created position," said Don Wood, Federal's CEO.

Jan Sweetnam, who’s been with Federal for 24 years, has been named to replace Berkes as president of the Western Region.
