Girl Scouts USA looks to retail to re-build a membership that has fallen off by 50% over the past decade.

There were more than 2 million members of the Girls Scout of the USA in 2013. By 2021, that number had fallen to just over a million.

Now the organization whose motto is “Be Prepared” has decided to open its innovative DreamLab concept at the nation’s largest retailer — Walmart.

The Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia will open Girl Scout DreamLab at the Walmart Supercenter in Albany, Ga., Oct. 3. Located at the front of the store, the lab is designed as a convenient and dynamic space where Girl Scouts can engage in hands-on activities that promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), entrepreneurship, life skills and outdoor adventures.

The Girl Scout DreamLab offers a hands-on STEM center, podcast booth  and meeting spaces for troops and groups. It will also double as workspace for Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia staff who provide support for Girl Scouts, families, and volunteers.

Being inside Walmart, the space also features a Girl Scout Boutique.

"It's an honor to help Girl Scouts of the USA and Girl Scout councils to strategically place Girl Scout DreamLabs in accessible locations throughout the country, allowing girls of all backgrounds find their inspiration to become future leaders," said Elizabeth Hart, Newmark's president of leasing for North America. "This partnership illustrates how physical locations can facilitate achieving Girl Scout’s mission to build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.”

The Albany DreamLab figures to be among the first of many. To date, six have already been opened.

“We are thrilled to lead the way with this new concept,” said Sue Else, CEO of Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia. “As an organization, we are evolving to meet the needs of today’s girls and offering enriching opportunities for them to try new things, explore their interests, develop as leaders, and make a positive impact on their communities.”
