Farfetch is not rescuing Barneys New York.
The online luxury fashion retailer was quick to respond to a story that appeared in the New York Post on August 26 which stated that “Barneys nears sale to online luxury retailer Farfetch.” In the early morning hours of August 27, Farfetch, which is based in London, issued a brief, to-the-point statement.
“The story is incorrect — Farfetch is not acquiring Barneys New York,” the company said.
Barneys filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this month, in a move designed to give it time to restructure its debts and continue operating while it looks for a buyer. The company has until Oct. 24 to find a buyer or face liquidation.
As part of the plan, the 96-year-old fashion-forward luxury retailer will shutter its stores in Chicago, Seattle and Las Vegas and Seattle, along with five smaller format stores and seven Barneys Warehouse locations.
