Dick’s Sporting Goods in May store openings
The nation’s largest sporting goods retailer is adding to its store portfolio.
Dick’s Sporting Goods will open two namesake stores in May, with locations at Carolina Place Mall, Pineville, N.C., and Parkdale Mall, Beaumont, Texas. The company will also open a Golf Galaxy store at Carolina Place.
Following the May store openings, Dick’s will have 728 namesake stores and 95 Golf Galaxy stores nationwide in 47 states.
Dick’s is feeling the sales fallout from its decision not to sell some guns, but it’s not backing down. For its fourth quarter (ended Feb. 2), Dick’s reported that sales fell to $2.49 billion from $2.66 billion the year ago which had an extra week, beating estimates of $2.48 billion. On the company’s quarterly call with investors, executives said Dick’s will remove guns, ammunition and hunting apparel from about 120 of its stores in locations where the category is underperforming. The retailer will fill the resulting open floor space with activewear, athletic footwear and sports gear. The move comes after a test in 10 stores late last year.
