Shakeup at Lidl U.S.

5/17/2018
A new person is poised to take charge of German discount grocer Lidl’s U.S. operations.

Lidl U.S. announced today that Johannes Fieber has been appointed president and CEO, and will assume responsibility for U.S. operations over the coming months. He replaces Brendan Proctor, who led the chain’s U.S. expansion since June 2015, when it established its U.S. headquarters in Arlington, Va.

Fieber has been with Lidl for about 10 years, serving in multiple Lidl countries. Most recently, he served as CEO of Lidl Sweden for more than two years.

“I am honored to be able to lead our expansion in the U.S., and look forward to building on the progress that is underway,” said Fieber. “I look forward to continuing our expansion into additional markets this year, and introducing more customers to Lidl’s high quality products and low prices.”

Lidl opened its first U.S. stores in June 2017. After an initial round of openings during which it opened some 50 locations over seven months, the chain’s expansion has slowed. Industry experts say Lidl’s U.S. entry has not been as smooth as expected. Problem include the size of its stores, which many feel are too big. Lidl is now working on a smaller format for urban areas.

Lidl operates about 10,500 stores in 28 countries.
