Simones, Lyon, and Scharfenaker come together to create space that connects people.

Renowned architect Curtis Scharfenaker has been responsible for the expansion of the showstopping Biqi Lane mixed-use project in China and the expansion of Citywalk at Universal Studios.

John Simones helped design “The Battery,” a lively entertaining and dining district across from the Braves’ Truist Park in Atlanta. In Kitakyushu, Japan, he took part in the creation of a bold and colorful geometric statement that bursts from the city skyline.

Now, both of these award-winning professionals have joined with Los Angeles-based Nadel Architects to launch Third Space, a new architectural studio focused on innovative mixed-use projects that “foster connection, discovery, and lasting emotional impact,” according to Nadel’s press release.

“Third Space gives us an opportunity to return to architecture as a form of storytelling — to build places where people want to linger, explore, and come back to,” said Nadel’s chairman and president Greg Lyon.

“John and Curtis bring unmatched vision and insight to this effort, and together we’re aiming to redefine what successful placemaking looks like in today’s world,” Lyon added.”

Third Space projects will focus on urban design and large-scale mixed use, emphasizing emotional engagement, social functionality, and architectural storytelling. Several design commissions are already underway, with details to be announced later this year.

“Great placemaking doesn’t start with a layout — it starts with understanding people,” said Scharfenaker. “Third Space is rooted in that idea. We’re building destinations that reflect the rhythm of community life.”

Simones’ website notes that the architect has always centered on the creation of places that provide “Authentic experience," where all people can share “common desires of family, community, and happiness.”

“People remember how a place made them feel — not just what they bought or saw,” said Simones. “With Third Space, we’re designing environments that go beyond function. They create memories and spark curiosity.

Nadel Architects mission statement notes that engaging architectural design must reflect the characteristics of the local community as well as respond to economic and environmental needs.

Its standout retail center designs in California include West Roseville Marketplace in Roseville, Sunset Millenium in Los Angeles, and Azalea in South Gate.

“Design,” observed Lyon, “has the power to shape how we connect with our cities and each other.”
