Ala Moana Center rides in the Year of the Horse

Traditional Chinese Lion Dances highlight the Lunar New Year Event at Ala Moana.

Honolulu’s Ala Moana Center has planned a more than week-long celebration of the Year of the Horse.

The event will feature an exclusive Lunar New Year gift-with-purchase promotion, traditional lion dances, and New Year and blessings throughout the center, and a Wishing Wall where shoppers can share hopes for the year ahead. 

Select stores and restaurants will also celebrate the season with limited-edition Lunar New Year merchandise, promotions and festive dining experiences.

The New Year celebration begins on Feb. 17, which corresponds with the opening of the New Year in China.

Here’s a full list of what visitors can take part in:

  • Running through the full schedule of dates for the event will be a Lunar New Year gift-with-purchase program. Shoppers who spend $1,000 receive an Ala Moana tote bag, a Year of the Horse charm, and a $100 gift card.
  • Shopper’s will be invited to mark the new year with messages of hope, health and happiness at the center’s Lunar New Year Wishing Wall from Feb. 12-20 on the mall’s Level 2.
  • Guests can witness master calligrapher Ina Chang do her art and receive complimentary, hand-lettered good luck charms.
  • Pole jumping performances will star lion dancers who leap between elevated poles.
  • The celebration closes on Feb. 22 with more lion dancing an at Ala Moana’s Centerstage. The Lion Dance is a 2,000-year-old Chinese tradition in which two dancers (head and tail) perform with accompaniment of drums, cymbals and gongs.
  • More than 100 lion dancers will spread good luck and collect red envelopes from various stores and restaurants throughout the center. 

Shoppers are invited to stop by and feed the lions for good fortune at more than 100 participating merchants, including Bath & Body Works, Chanel, Foodland Farms, Happy Wahine, Louis Vuitton, Nordstrom, Swarovski, TUMI and more.

Throughout the celebration, select Ala Moana Center stores and restaurants will offer Lunar New Year-inspired merchandise, exclusive promotions, and festive dining experiences. Participating merchants include Aloha Lane, Big Island Candies, Foodland Farms, Tiffany & Co. and more.
