Academy plans nine new fall store openings — here's where
Academy Sports + Outdoors is growing its footprint in the Midwest and South this fall with a slate of new store openings.
The sporting goods chain is planning to open nine stores in the third quarter of this year, including in larger markets such as Bloomington, Ind., Ft. Myers, Fla. and Birmingham, Ala. Academy has already opened three new stores this year, with plans to open a total of 15-17 new stores in fiscal year 2024.
The planned 2024 expansion for Academy comes as the retailer has opening 160 to 180 new stores over the next five years on its agenda, according to company executives on the chain’s earning call in March.
Academy’s nine new stores are set for the following locations:
- Beckley, W.V.
- Kingsport, Tenn.
- Bloomington, Ind.
- Selma, N.C.
- Ft. Myers, Fla.
- Birmingham, Ala.
- Springfield, Ohio
- Bradenton, Fla.
- Bulverde, Texas

"Academy Sports + Outdoors is excited to continue our company growth with nine new stores this fall, making shopping with us more convenient than ever in existing markets and providing new customers with the best localized assortment of sports apparel, footwear, equipment and outdoor gear," said Eric Friederich, senior VP of retail operations at Academy. "Academy is looking forward to helping more active families have fun out there and become the new go-to destination for customers looking for the top brands at the lowest prices."
At Academy stores, customers can find apparel, footwear, sports and camping equipment, hunting and fishing gear, outdoor cooking, and more from top national brands as well as the chain’s private label brands. Academy also offers free services such as grill and bike assembly, scope mounting, bore sighting, line winding/spooling and propane exchange. Hunting and fishing licenses are also available to purchase in stores.
Founded in 1938, Academy operates 285 stores across 19 states.
