Sam’s Club brings scan-and-go to the pump

Sam’s Club is expediting the process of paying for fuel.

The warehouse club retailer, which initially piloted in-store contactless, “scan & go” mobile payment in 2016, is introducing a new mobile pay-at-the-pump feature called scan & go fuel.

Launched earlier in 2020 with a small-scale pilot, scan & go fuel is rolling out to more than 70 stores across the country with a full-scale implementation to all 518 Sam’s Club fuel stations expected by the end of the year. Other retailers who are launching or piloting similar frictionless, pay-at-the-pump mobile payment solutions this year include Circle K and Cumberland Farms. 7-Eleven and ExxonMobil have taken the concept a step further with voice-activated fuel payment.

Customers can download the Sam’s Club app on their iPhone or Android smartphone, click on the scan & go icon, scan the QR code at the Sam’s Club fuel station pump, select a method of payment within the app, and begin fueling. They will receive a receipt via email.

“We continue to innovate for the future by providing member-first solutions that are rooted in convenience and fueled by technology,” said Eddie Garcia, senior VP and chief product officer, and Vinod Bidarkoppa, senior VP of technology, Sam’s Club, in a corporate blog post. Enter: scan & go fuel. A mobile pay-at-the-pump experience that brings together contactless payments, speed, and low prices all from the convenience of the Sam’s Club app.”

According to Sam’s Club, adoption rate for in-store scan & go has doubled since fall 2019.
