When it came to clicking online coupons in 2015, consumers had clear preferences about what they wanted discounts for.
Online deal and discount platform RetailMeNot.com released a list of the 10 most popular coupons among its users in 2015. Some offers received close to 1.5 million clicks. In order, consumers clicked:
• 20% off one item at Tillys
• $5 off an online order of $15 or more at Ulta
• Up to 35% off a car rental at Budget
• 30% off with a Kohl’s charge card, plus $10 Kohl’s Cash and free shipping on $50 or more at Kohl’s
• 93% off .com domains at GoDaddy
• 20% off one regular-priced item at PacSun
• $25 off first ride via Uber
• Free deluxe mystery gift with any order of $25 or more at Sephora
• Up to 30% off select car rentals at Avis
• Up to $10 off online bookings at SuperShuttle
Looking at the list, a few clear consumer preferences for online coupons become apparent. Two deals (top coupon Tillys and PacSun) were for teen apparel/accessories, and two (Ulta and Sephora) were for beauty. Another four (Budget, Uber, Avis and SuperShuttle) were transportation-related, with department store chain Kohl’s (a frequent provider of RetailMeNot discounts) and non-retailer GoDaddy rounding out the list.
Retailers in the teen, beauty and transportation segments can take heart that deal-seeking consumers want their products, and other department store chains may want to increase their frequency of online coupons to better compete with Kohl’s. Retailers in other verticals may want to work a little harder at getting deals that attract consumer attention in front of them.
