Outerknown is planning to open four new stores in California and Washington D.C.

A sustainable apparel brand co-founded by a surfing legend is expanding its retail footprint.

Outerknown is opening four new locations in California and Washington D.C.  Founded in 2015, the company currently operates four stores, with two in California (Malibu and El Segundo) and one each in Boston and New York City.  In partnership with experiential design agency Starch Creative, Outerknown's  new stores will be located in Marin, Carlsbad and Palo Alto, Calif., as well as the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington D.C. (See end of article for location information.)

Outerknown, which sells a variety of sustainability-produced tops, bottoms and accessories for men and women alike, curates its products for each specific store. The company’s retail spaces are designed to reflect the brand's sustainable ethos and include features such as Stelapop hangers and fixtures made from S.E.A. denim scraps, Pasqual Arnella sustainable paper paste mannequins and York's reclaimed flooring made from submerged hemlock logs from Nova Scotia. The spaces also boasts reclaimed maritime rope art installations by environmental scientist and artist Ethan Estess as well as the new Sonos Pro retail sound experience,

In addition, each location will offer a customization station where customers will be able to add embroidery to personalize their products.

“These new retail spaces are a true celebration of community,” said Outerknown co-founder Kelly Slater, who is widely considered to be the greatest professional surfer of all time. “Many of these spots are places I love to visit and feel personally connected to. These locations also represent the work that many of my friends are doing to clean up the ocean and planet, like York reclaimed floors and Ethan Estess. Good planets are hard to find, and at Outerknown, we are working tirelessly to protect the one we’ve got. That takes getting everyone onboard.”
