Barneys in retail comeback — at Saks Fifth Avenue

Barneys is back…kind of.

Barneys at Saks has opened on the fifth floor of the Saks Fifth Avenue flagship in Manhattan, reported WWD. The opening is part of Authentic Brands Group’s plan to revive the iconic luxury brand. Next up is a freestanding, 14,000-sq.-ft. Barneys at Saks location in Greenwich, Conn., on the site of a former Saks store.

Barneys went bankrupt and shuttered all its U.S. stores in 2019. Its intellectual property was subsequently bought by Authentic Brands, which joined forces with Saks for the department store retailer to serve as the exclusive Barneys retail and e-commerce partner in the U.S. and Canada,

The Barneys at Saks shop occupies the fifth floor, some 54,000 sq. ft. in all, according to the report, and carries 16 labels that are new to Saks. The space is also home to pop-ups for emerging designs and a fast-casual restaurant dedicated to brain health.
