Innovative grocer, Basics Market, expanding in home market

A store that combines grocery offerings with a nutritionally-minded focus is adding more locations.

Basics Market, which has five locations in the Portland, Oregon, area, will open a store in the Pearl District of Portland in August.

Founded in 2017 by Pacific Foods’ founder Chuck Eggert, Basics is designed to help people cook healthful meals at home. The assortment emphasizes seasonal ingredients and customers have access to Basics’ on staff nutrition experts.

“Our model exemplifies a next-generation grocery built around a commitment to locally-sourced, healthy, seasonal eating,” said Eggert.

Each Basics Market is tailored to its space and the needs of the neighborhood. At 13,000 sq. ft., the Pearl District store is the company's largest location yet and will include such features as:
    A cheese aging room with windows where shoppers can view hard and soft cheeses aging in chambers in real-time;
    A “discovery”  kitchen with state-of-the-art cooking facilities (a robust schedule of classes, including interactive demonstrations and hands-on workshops will resume when safe to do so);
    Sustainably raised meats sourced locally from farms that prioritize animal welfare and sustainable practices, local seafood, cured meats and plant-based selections;
    Fresh, seasonal produce delivered daily to ensure peak nutrition;
    A bottle shop stocked with a selection of local libations; and
    Monthly rotating recipe cards inspired by seasonal and regional products.
