More reported layoffs at Sears HQ

Sears’ store footprint isn’t the only thing that’s shrinking.

“Hundreds” of corporate staffers have been laid off at Sears’ headquarters in Hoffman Estates, Ill., and a field office in San Francisco, reported Business Insider. The total number of laid-off employees is fewer than 300, according to the report.

The news comes a week after Transformco, the company formed in January to buy the remaining assets from the bankrupt Sears Holding Corp., announced that 96 (51 Sears locations and 45 Kmart sites) would close by February.

Transformco confirmed the layoffs in a statement to Business Insider.

"Since purchasing substantially all the assets of Sears Holdings Corporation in February 2019, Transformco has faced a difficult retail environment," the statement said. "We have been working hard to position Transformco for success by focusing on our competitive strengths and pruning operations that have struggled due to increased competition and other factors. Unfortunately, this process resulted in a number of difficult but necessary decisions, including closing stores and making adjustments at our corporate headquarters and field positions to reflect our new structure.”

The new job cuts come about two months after a round of layoffs that affected about 250 employees.
