  • Home furnishings retailer entering new state

    West Elm will open its first Idaho store, in downtown Boise, on Thursday, June 9.

    The 14,158-sq.-ft. -store incorporated wooden “Tater Blocks” salvaged from the renovation of Simplot’s Caldwell-based potato storage facility into the store’s custom interior design. The blocks, once used as industrial flooring for potato storage facilities, have been repurposed to create a unique art installation at the new store.

  • Kroger divisional exec to exit company

    Russ Dispense, president of the King Soopers division of The Kroger Co., plans to retire on July 1 after 51 years with the company.

    Dispense began his career with Kroger in 1965, when he joined King Soopers as a courtesy clerk. He served in various leadership positions in stores and district management through the years, as well as at warehouses, manufacturing plants and administrative offices. Dispense was promoted to VP of retail operations and merchandising for the King Soopers division in 1983. He also served as VP of real estate.

  • Report: Amazon suffers search outage

    The search capability on Amazon.com reportedly malfunctioned for several hours the morning of Thursday, June 2.

    According to TechCrunch, an outage prevented users from being able to search for products or open product categories on the Amazon.com homepage. The homepage itself and product pages were not affected by the service interruption, which appeared to be resolved as of 10 a.m. EDT.
     

  • Village Super Market profit slumps during Q3

    Several factors conspired to produce a drop in net income at Village Super Market Inc. during the third quarter of fiscal 2016, despite a slight bump in sales.

    Net income was $5.88 million in the quarter, down 55% from $13.21 million in the third quarter of the previous fiscal year. The prior year period including a net gain from the recovery of insurance receivables related to Superstorm Sandy and a tax benefit a result of a settlement with the New Jersey Division of Taxation.

  • Study: In-store pickup has room for improvement

    Retailers are fairly good about making sure buy online pickup in store (BOPIS) orders are ready in a timely manner, but lacking in other aspects.

    According to a new mystery shopping study of the BOPIS offerings of 30 major retailers from omnichannel commerce platform Kibo, the e-tailing group and Multichannel Merchant, “Unified Commerce and the Customer Experience,” 75% of retailers evaluated had orders ready for pickup within 24 hours.

  • Survey: What social platform influences back-to-school shoppers?

    The current school year is just ending, but consumers are already looking ahead to the fall.

    According to a new survey of 300 U.S. adults who plan on leading their families’ back-to-school shopping efforts from social engagement firm CrowdTap, blogs and social media conversations rival traditional advertising formats (e.g. magazine circulars and TV ads) when it comes to what drives back-to-school purchases.

  • May same-store sales fizzle

    With a couple of exceptions, May same-store sales figures reported by several major apparel, specialty and discount chains were less than impressive.

    First the good news. Bath & Body Works reported a 3% same-store sales lift for May 2016 compared to the same month a year earlier. Same-store sales at Costco Wholesale Corp. and L Brands were flat, which may not sound that encouraging but was better than most other retailers reporting figures for the month.

  • Pandora extends Synchrony financing agreement

    Synchrony Financial will continue to offer consumer financing to Pandora Jewelry customers.

    The two companies have announced a multi-year extension of their consumer financing program agreement. The program, which began in 2011, will continue to provide Pandora shoppers with access to a range of payment options through the Pandora Preferred card program. Special financing will be available at select concept stores nationwide.
