First Look: Foot Locker expands ‘power’ store format

Foot Locker has brought its customer- and community-centric “power” format to the West Coast.

The athletic footwear and apparel retailer has opened a 12,000-sq.-ft. location in Compton, Calif.  Designed to serve as a hub for local sneaker culture, art, music and sports, the new store features custom artwork from local artists, including a mural on the exterior and digital canvas art for the interior. In keeping with the local emphasis and in support of the community, employees were hired from within a five-mile radius of the store.

The new Foot Locker includes a curbside pickup window and a space for hosting community-oriented events (all events will adhere to local social distancing guidelines.) Along with top athletic brands, and to further Foot Locker’s “home grown” hyper-local product initiative, the merchandise assortment includes a curated group of local brand exclusives and limited-release products.

Foot Locker debuted its power store format in the U.S. in early 2019, in the Metro Detroit area, which was followed by a location in New York City’s Washington Heights neighborhood later that year.

"As part of our commitment to bring the best-localized expression of Foot Locker to consumers, we are excited to expand our Power Store model to the West Coast with a new location in Compton," said Bryon Milburn, senior VP and general manager of Foot Locker U.S. "Compton is a passionate market for sneaker culture, and we look forward to creating immersive brand connections from the local store staff, to the in-store experiences and products we offer.”
