Amazon Fresh is preparing to open its first stores in New Jersey and New York.

Amazon continues to expand its grocery store format to new markets.

The company announced it is now hiring for hundreds of full- and part-time employees for two Amazon Fresh grocery stores that will open in Paramus, N.J., and Oceanside, N.Y. These will be the first Amazon Fresh store locations in each state.

Both stores will feature Amazon’s “Just Walk Out’ technology, which company pioneered in its Amazon Go convenience stores.  The technology uses overhead computer-vision cameras, weight sensors and deep-learning technology to detect merchandise that shoppers take from or return to shelves and track items selected in a virtual cart.

Customers who opt for Just Walk Out shopping enter the store by scanning the in-store QR code in their Amazon app, use the Amazon One proprietary palm payment solution, or insert a credit or debit card linked to their Amazon account to open the Just Walk Out gates.

In April, Amazon Fresh opened its second location in Virginia, with three additional stores in the works for Northern Virginia. The company now operates 30 Amazon Fresh stores across the U.S., including 14 in California, seven in Illinois, four in Washington state (including one designed to be zero net carbon), two in Virginia, and one each in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

Positions at the upcoming Amazon Fresh stores in New Jersey and New York offer starting wages between $15 and $18.55 per hour depending on the store and role type. New employees are offered a variety of benefits packages starting on their first day on the job as well as opportunities for career growth.

“I’m proud to bring hundreds of good jobs with benefits to the Paramus community as we prepare to welcome customers,” said Chris Boje, store manager of the Amazon Fresh location in Paramus. “Our new Amazon Fresh store was designed from the ground up to offer the local community with a seamless grocery shopping experience and low prices on a wide assortment of national brands and high-quality produce, meat and seafood.”

“We’ve always been at the forefront of business and economic development, and we are proud Oceanside is the site of Amazon Fresh’s first location in New York State,” stated Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin. “This new store will be a great opportunity for creating jobs and boosting our local economy, and we wish Amazon the best of luck here in America’s largest township.”

“We’re excited to welcome Amazon Fresh to Paramus, especially during a time when access to high-quality, low-priced groceries is so important,” said Senator Joseph A. Lagana (Paramus). “This store will provide shoppers in the area with a new and innovative option for their grocery shopping and will also bring hundreds of jobs to the local community.”

“We’re thrilled that Amazon is opening its first Amazon Fresh store in New Jersey in Paramus,” said Paramus Mayor Richard LaBarbiera. “Not only will this new store provide fresh, low-priced groceries for shoppers in the area, but Amazon is also creating hundreds of jobs with good pay and benefits locally.”

Amazon Fresh is a new grocery store that offers a seamless grocery shopping experience whether customers are shopping in-store or online. Customers can find everything they love about Amazon, such as consistent low prices, convenience, and great selection, along with delicious, prepared food offerings made in-store every day and a convenient in-store shopping experience.

One of the many benefits of working at an Amazon Fresh store is the opportunity to cross-train across the entirety of the grocery store. Grocery associates will learn everything from customer service, to stocking shelves, to cashiering, to picking and packing customer orders. Food service associates work in the store’s culinary area, preparing delicious, fresh food offerings for customers each day.

Amazon promotes from within; since the first Amazon Fresh grocery store opened in 2020, hundreds of employees have been promoted to roles with increased pay and responsibility. In 2021, a majority of store management positions were filled by employees promoted from hourly roles.

The Just Walk Out technology that will be offered at these stores is made possible by a combination of computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning, which automatically detects when products are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in a virtual cart. When customers are done shopping, they can skip the checkout line and get going. Later, they’ll receive a receipt and charge to their Amazon accounts. Just Walk Out shopping is available to any customer with an Amazon account and traditional checkout lanes are also available for all shoppers.
