When Macy’s reported a 4.2% May same-store sales gain on Wednesday, ahead of the rest of the pack, analysts wondered whether that would set the tone for the rest of the department store players. It did — and it didn’t.

Results were mixed among the department store players in February, as Macy’s turned in a strong performance and Kohl’s missed expectations.

Kohl’s Corp. reported that profit for the fourth quarter dropped 7.9% to $455 million, from $494 million a year earlier, as the retailer experienced unexpected revenue declines during the holiday selling period.

A Friday report in Advertising Age said that Kohl’s Corp. has added $30 million to its fourth quarter marketing spend in order to pad its efforts to garner holiday shopping dollars.

Kohl’s Corp. reported that profit for the quarter ended Oct. 29 rose 20% to $211 million, compared with $176 million in the year-ago period.
